James Oliver Norred, Family, and Relatives 1899

This picture was passed to my father, James Clifford Norred, by his great Aunt Lena May Norred his father, James Calvin Norreds sister. Lena numbered each person on the front as you can see and listed who they were on the back. Lena May Norred was born 29 July 1892 to George Cullen Norred and Nellie May Newton was James Oliver's granddaughter. Her father, George Cullen died in 1897 and her mother remarried Baxter Euen Burns 31 Aug 1900. George Cullen was James Oliver and Margaret's third child. My great aunt Lena was the family historian and began her work in the late 1940's early 1950's and continued until her death 15 Nov 1969. She knew all of the above people and as a young man I would sit for hours and listen as she told stories about the family history during family visits there in late 1950's through the 1960's. Lena's records which were still largely in the form of notes at her death and were passed on to family members and over the years scattered about. I have a somewhat complete copy now. I am using these records and my own research as facts and sources for the following information.

(1) James Oliver Norred & (3) Margaret Amanda Coon Norred.

James Oliver Norred was born 6 Oct 1832 & Margaret Amanda Coon Norred was born 4 May 1842. That would make them 67 & 57 in this picture. I am assuming until I know more, that the picture was taken at the Norred farm on Hairston Creek, approx 5 miles South East of Burnet, Burnet County, Texas.

James Oliver Norred is the 4th generation descendant of Benjamin Isaac Norred, Our original ancestor who came to the American Colonies from England sometime around 1746. His is the son of Isaac Oliver Norred and Elizabeth J Warren married 26 July 1831 and born to them just east of Canton, Madison County Mississippi. He is the stepson of Cullen Curlee Arnett as his father, Isaac Oliver, was killed by a run away slave in Carthage, Leake County, Mississippi in 1833. Elizabeth remarried to Cullen Curlee Arnett 22 Aug 1834 in Carthage and they migrated to Texas sometime before 1840. They are on the 1850 census as living in Milam and Williamson, Milam County, Texas with James Oliver at 17, single and a farmer. In the 1860 census they are in Burnet County, Texas with James Oliver at 27-28, single and a farmer. On 30 Aug 1860 he married Margaret Amanda Coon.

Margaret Amanda Coon was born 4 May 1842 in Georgia to John Adam and Martha Stevens Coon. John and Martha with family first show up in Burnet County 17 Dec 1853 when they bought some ranch property. They were both born in South Carolina as were their parents. They lived in Georgia for some time and some of the children were born there before coming to Texas. Margaret was the 11th of 12 children. Little is know as yet of her early life. She was raised on the Coon family farm near Hairston Creek and Oatmeal, Texas. She married James Oliver Norred 30 Aug 1860 and they ended up living next door to the Coons on what became the Norred farm. We are not sure if he bought this land or John Coon perhaps Cullen C Arnett gave it to them or helped them buy it. Margaret's younger sister Frances, married James Oliver's stepbrother, George Cullen Arnett 11 June 1866. George was the son of Cullen C Arnett.

(5) Wesley Norred (7) Sarah Maude Campbelle Norred & (2) Mattie Norred Lewis

Wesley Norred (5) (some think it might be William Wesley Norred) was born 10 Aug 1873 and had a twin brother William Wilson Norred. Wilson headed out like his brothers before him to the Northwest territories between 1890 and 1891 at age 17 or 18. Wesley married Maude Campbelle (7) 20 Dec 1893. I am not that sure of Maude's parents yet. I think they were from Florida and still looking into it. She and Wesley wed 20 Dec 1893. Seated in her grandpa's lap is Margaret Elizabeth (Maggie) Norred. The only reason I can think that Lena would list her as Maggie Norred Lewis is that I show a mystery spouse, Mungen Y Lewis, whom she might have married late in life? I have her living with her mother, Sarah M 52 in the 1930 census at 32 and single along with siblings Ora and Wesley plus a Roomer Virgie Boyd female 20 and single. I show her death sometime around 1830. Her father Wesley died 10 Sept 1909 Dunn, Scurry, Texas. Sarah Maude Campbelle Norred died 26 Nov 1957 Taylor, Texas.

(4) Aunt Nan Coon

Lena has her listed as Margaret's sister-in-law but I am thinking she might actually be Margaret's younger sister Francis Ann Coon Arnett. If so that would be her son behind her, Tom Arnett (12) and niece, Annie Arnett (6). If she is a sister-in-law I don't know which Coon son she would have married as from the information I have none of the spouses are close to "Nan" which at best might be close to Nancy. Margaret's sister was Francis Ann but it all is a guess on this one.

(9) Martha Maggie Elizabeth Norred Windsor

Mattie Norred was the only daughter born to James Oliver and Margaret Amanda Norred. She married Thomas Fletcher Windsor 26 May 1897. It was thought that Mattie and Thomas's first daughter Neva Windsor was in James Oliver’s lap. But Lena's ID and the fact Wesley has his hands on his fathers shoulders pretty well rules this out.

(8) Edward Paskel Norred

Edward was born to James Oliver and Margaret Amanda Norred 8 May 1884. He was the last of 11 children. Edward married Georgia Ann Mitcheltree in 1906.

(8) Robert Lee Norred

Robert was born to James Oliver and Margaret Amanda Norred 26 Aug 1881. He married Georgia Alice Gifford in California around 1904 so he must have left sometime after 28 June 1900 as he was on that census still living on the family farm.

(11) Samuel Joshep Norred

Samuel was born to James Oliver and Margaret Amanda Norred 29 Aug 1881. He also married a Mitcheltree, Mattie Kate Mitcheltree in 1911. They had 6 possibly 7 children and lived out there lives in Burnet, Texas. Two of the first children died before a year old.

(6) Annie Arnett & (12) Tom Arnett.

Lena has Tom and Annie listed as Son and Neice of George Cullen Arnett and Francis Ann Coon Arnett.
