George Cullen Norred and uncle, John Cullen Arnett

Most likely Dickinson North Dakota area 1887

George Cullen Norred(right standing) was born 24 Febuary 1866 to James Oliver and Margaret Amanda Coon Norred at the Norred farm on Hairston Creek, approx 5 miles South East of Burnet, Burnet County, Texas.

John Cullen Arnett was the son of Cullen Curlee and Elizabeth Warren Norred Arnett who was James Oliver Norred's step father. James Oliver Norred is the father of George Cullen Norred.

This picture was passed to my father by his Aunt Lena May Norred who was his fathers (James Calvin Norred) sister. They were both children of George Cullen Norred. Lena numbered and listed who they were on the back. Click on the image to see larger pictures of both the front and back sides. The picture was in bad shape when received. I believe it was removed from Nellie May Newton Norred Burn's photo album at the time of her funeral by Lena and pictures passed out to various people. I cleaned it up best I could in photo shop to where it looks fairly good. If you click on the back picture I have a 800 pixel wide resize of the original image with each numbered in Lena's hand. This image was not refurbished so you can see the "petina" or age.

I am making an assumption here on the exact date of the photo. I believe it was taken on George’s 21st birthday and his uncle John was taking him out for a night on the town. I qualify this by George's age on the back listed as 21yrs. he was born on 24 Feb 1866 and you add 21 yrs you get 1887. Now people in 1887 just didn't go have their picture taken except for a special reason. It was expensive and not many photographers in the frontier towns. Now from Lena's notes George left on a cattle drive around 1884 or 1885, and was gone for 5 or 6 years in Wyoming and North Dakota territories. He returned to the family farm on Hairston Creek in 1890. He married Nellie May Newton in 1891. So in 1887 he was in Wyoming or North Dakota. So I date the photograph on or around 24 Feb 1887 in Dickinson North Dakota. He, his uncle George, Albert and John was there at that time raising cattle for several large ranchers.
